While superficially similar to the rank structures used by western militaries, the standard rank system used by ZOCU was designed from first principles in the 2150s. The actual titled 'Ranks' are general descriptors of relative responsibilities and command priority and do not strictly equate to pay grade.

Non-Comissioned Ranks

Non-Comissioned (ie, 'Enlisted') ranks are ranks with limited command responsibilities. To a greater or lesser extent all are 'specialists' to their occupation.
E-1: Private; lowest rank, actually broken into three subranks. It is thus common to hear someone designated 'P-2', ie, Private-Two, a step up from a P-1 which is the very lowest rank.
E-2: Corporal; the lowest rank that can lawfully issue an order.
E-3: Sergeant; the primary 'non-commissioned officer' rank. Like Private, it is subdivided into three subranks and formally a Sergeant-3 will be titled 'Sergeant of the Third'
