For a long time it hung there, a tantalizing jewel just a little out of reach. A system without a jump zone, but one so close, so tantalizingly close to one that did. A mere quarter if a year for light. Surely not a distance uncrossable for human technology. A system with a blue world, oceans and life. Initial probe reports showed other signs worth investigation. Dubbed the drift, a vast cloud of objects circled the star just outside the orbit of the life bearing planet. While a few speculated them to be artificial, most believe them to be the debris of a planet or perhaps asteroids with some unusual qualities.

You are member of the first live expedition across the gap, a journey of almost a year even with the massive engines aboard the expeditionary craft the Ibn Battuta. You have awoken from cold sleep as the ship costs into the system, a mere few days away from the drift.
