Being muscle for the mob is a good job. It's challenging work, lots of outdoor activity, and you're almost guaranteed never to go hungry. Of course, there is that niggling issue of the mob being ''complete dicks'', and the risk of dying as well, of course. Neither of those complications bothered John. In fact, he made an almost perfect lackey, and was willing to do pretty much anything for anyone as long as they could pay, and he was good at his job. 

The Awakening changed everything. More specifically, his Avatar- wearing the personality of what it insists is a past life- decided to set itself up as a prosthetic conscience. This made being a sociopathic arsehole a little difficult, and eventually, John cracked under the pressure. Nowadays, he's quite a nice guy, determined to try and atone for some of the nasty stuff he's been involved in. Of course, his former employers take a dim view of him quitting, so he's not allowed to live in peace. Fortunately, a mage, even one without much formal training or idea what he's doing, still has some fairly significant advantages over run of the mill hitmen. One of these days, he's going to have to sort the whole thing out...
